The Attribution Gap: Why Ad Platforms Overcount and How True ROAS Solves It
/ 7 min read
If you sum the revenue reported in Google Ads and Meta Ads Manager, it almost certainly exceeds your store's total gross sales. This discrepancy isn't a glitch; it is an inherent feature of platform attribution windows.
Why Platforms Overcount
Ad networks rely on lenient attribution models: 7-day click and 1-day view-through windows. Under these rules, an ad network claims credit if a user was merely exposed to an ad before purchasing, regardless of whether that ad created incremental demand or if the user was already a brand loyalist.
The Cost of Phantom ROAS
When an ad manager reports a 4.5x ROAS, brand operators scale spend. But if the store-verified ROAS is only 2.1x, the merchant is scaling an unprofitable campaign that is silently eroding gross margins.
How Store-Verified Attribution Works
ØSTEN ingests every order the moment it is paid via Shopify webhooks. It reads the UTM parameters the shopper actually arrived with, matches the order to a single campaign (by campaign ID where the ad platform passes one through, by campaign name otherwise) and credits that campaign alone. One order, one campaign, no double-counting. The result is an unbiased, side-by-side view: platform-claimed revenue versus store-verified cash.
